February 2010 Reminders

February 8th, will mark our 100th day of school for this year, and during the whole week we are encouraging students to particpate in our Power of the Penny charity fundraising drive. Send in your pennies, they’ll all be donated to a good cause.

On Thursday, February 11, we’re inviting all cowgirls and cowboys to attend our annual student parent square dance. Third grade will be presenting their dances from 5:00 to 5:45, fourth grade from 6:00 to 6:45, and fifth and sixth grade from 7:00 to 7:45. This is our exciting way to get families involved with what we have been doing during the past few weeks in Physical Education. We are happy to mention that Lester Bradley from Thornton, NH will be calling the dance. He is very highly recognized for his square dance calling in New Hampshire and even nationally. We are looking forward to seeing y’all on Thursday. Students participating are asked to be here at least 5 minutes before their show. The gymnasium will be decorated like a farm and we encourage you to dress with some farm or western style to help show the spirit. We sincerely hope you can attend the show. This counts as a physical education project.

Please note that our Family Bingo Night, originally scheduled for Friday, February 12th, has been rescheduled for Friday, March 12.

Lastly, our annual “Love Your Earth/Cartridges for Kids” recycling contest starts this Monday and runs through February 18th. Cartridges, cell phones, DVDs, and video games are some of the items that can be delivered to your child’s classroom or to the Lakeway Office. I’ll be taking the five students who bring in the most items to the Topic of the Town for breakfast. The class that collects the most items will also receive a prize. Please see your child’s handout for additional information.

Winter Program & Play

First of all for the parents of students who participate in either the skiing or snowboarding program on Mondays, we are sending home an insurance waiver that must be signed by parents and returned to school no later than Friday, January 22. If we don't have a waiver for your child, he or she will not be able to participate in the program on Monday, so please check your child's backpack, sign the waiver, and return it to school asap. Parents who are either chaperones, or instructors, must sign the waiver in more than one place, so please read the form carefully.

Secondly, The Lakeway Drama Group would like to invite you to their 7th production on Thursday, January 21st and Friday, January 22nd. This play is called Gottawanna-a Summer Camp Mystery and is the story of a beloved summer camp that is at risk of being shut down, because someone has found a way to get rid of the most miserable counselor the camp has ever known. The father of the counselor hires two well-known investigators to find out whodunnit. They find out that no one is above suspicion.

Curtains will open each night at 6:30. This play is family friendly, and members of the audience will be called on to help solve the crime. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted to help those affected by the fire Saturday night. We hope to see you there!!!

Updated SEPTEMBER 14, 2009

As we complete our second week I would like to thank all parents, students, and staff members for getting our new school year off to an excellent start. Success in school will only result when all of us work together; so please keep in close contact with your child's teacher.

Tomorrow will be the last day that parents can escort students into classrooms, and beginning Monday, September 14th, we will ask all parents to say goodbye before the students enter the building. Any parent who needs to enter the building will be asked to check in at the front office.

Please remember that all students should be in their classrooms by 8:00 AM, but also remember that students who walk or are driven to school should not arrive before 7: 45.

This week we sent home a brochure to all families about our Title 1 program. Due to the high percentage of students at Lakeway who qualify for free or reduced lunch, our Title 1 program will be operating differently; Title 1 services will be delivered in the regular classrooms, and our Title 1 staff will be able to work will all students. We are very excited about this change and we feel we will be better able to address students needs with this new delivery system.

Lastly I want to announce that next Friday, September 18th, our Safe Routes to Schools Committee will be sponsoring another walk or ride your bike to school day. More information about this program will be sent home, but please mark you calendars. September 18th will also be our first School Spirit Day.

Again I want to thank all of you for helping make the start of our school year so successful.

It's hard to believe that a new school year has begun!

One of the great benefits of the education business is that every Fall everyone gets a fresh start. Not every business has such a clearly defined new year. The new school year is a wonderful opportunity to change habits that didn't work, and implement new ideas that will move us closer to our goals and mission.

Many members of the Lakeway staff have been very busy this summer attending workshops on the Pyramid Response to Intervention model, data, technology, and leveled literacy interventions! I am very proud of the way our staff has tackled the challenges of improving student performance, and I am convinced now, more than ever, that we are on the right path toward addressing our kids' needs! Our custodial crew has also been very busy; cleaning and painting rooms, moving furniture, and putting up walls.

We will have a few new faces at Lakeway. Our new staff members include:

  • Walter Anacki-Special Education Coordinator
  • Danielle Whitcomb-Math Coach/Coordinator
  • Kristen Blais-6th grade teacher
  • Laura Lacroix-Social Worker
  • Kris Germain-paraprofessional
  • Karen Klos-paraprofessional

The challenges that face our students seem to get bigger each year, yet I am convinced that with your help we can meet them successfully. I encourage you to stay in close contact with your child's teacher; such a partnership is essential if your child is make the progress that today's world demands.

I am looking forward to working with every child, parent, and teacher in order to make this a great school. Together we can do it!
